【摘要】:ThispartofBS8723setsoutthedefinitions,symbolsandabbreviationsandotherconventionsforinformationretrievalapplicationsofstructuredvocabularies.TheBS8723seriesgivesrecommendationsforthedevelopmentandmaintenanceofstructuredvocabulariesofsubjecttermsandconceptsforinformationretrieval.Italsogivesguidanceontheexchangeofdatabetweenmultiplevocabulariesandbetweenavocabularyandthesoftwarewithwhichitinteracts.BS8723appliestovocabulariesusedforretrievinginformationfromtextresources,suchasknowledgebases,bibliographicdatabasesorcollectionsoffulltextdocuments,andalsocataloguesofimagesorartefacts,suchasthoseinamuseumcollection.Structuredvocabulariesareusedinpost-coordinateretrievalsystems,hierarchicaldirectories,pre-coordinateindexesandclassificationsystems.BS8723doesnotapplytothepreparationofback-of-the-bookindexes,althoughmanyofitsrecommendationsmaybeusefulforthatpurpose.Itdoesnotcoverthestructureofauthorityfilesofpropernamesofpeople,organizationsandplaces,whilerecognizingthatthesemaysometimesinteractwithvocabulariesofsubjectterms.
